Thern Showcases Product Range in Series of Case Studies

Winch and davit crane manufacturer Thern Inc. has published a series of case studies that demonstrate the versatility of its lifting equipment range.

The case studies cover a variety of applications including equipment for a retractable awning system for a theatre in Vancouver and winches for a high profile projects on a giant ferris wheel in Las Vegas and the Hoover Dam.

Winona, Minnesota-based Thern is a specialist supplier of systems that lift, lower, pull or position virtually anything weighing between 100 to 100,000 pounds. For over 60 years, the company has provided equipment for industries including entertainment, water, oil and gas, bulk handling, construction, mining and many more.

Examples of Thern’s work in entertainment installations are prevalent throughout the case studies. At a theatre in Vancouver, it provided 54 custom roll drops and motors with eight drum winches for installation of a retractable awning to block the upper tier seating creating a smaller stadium atmosphere when required. At the Rogers Arena in the same city, Thern supplied eight high speed drum winches for lifting and lowering transparent banners.

At the world’s largest ferris wheel in Las Vegas, meanwhile, Thern supplied a contractor with two air winches to handle the task of pulling and positioning 112 spoke cables. Three Thern cranes are also utilized at the project, used for maintenance.

Thern has also outlined the capabilities of its equipment at the Hoover Dam Bypass Project where it supplied six electric winches with 26,000 pound load capacity and 15,000 pound line pull. The winches provided the contractor with the required force and control to lift the stays and position them as each arch segment was advanced.
