SEAA Publishes White Paper
The Steel Erectors Association of America (SEAA) announces the availability of a new white paper, “13 Contract Risks to Address Before You Sign: A Practical Guide for Steel Contractors Reviewing Subcontract Agreements.”
Developed by SEAA’s Strategic Planning Committee, the resource helps contractors identify terms that can affect how their work is priced, planned, performed and paid for.
Designed for companies involved in structural steel erection, reinforcing steel, metal decking and steel fabrication, the white paper encourages contractors to resolve potential problems before committing to an agreement. Each section explains why an issue matters, offers practical points to consider and highlights contract language that deserves closer attention.
“SEAA is committed to sharing knowledge that helps our members — and the industry — build stronger businesses. This white paper is designed to help contractors recognize risks, ask better questions and make more informed decisions before they sign,” said Pete Gum, Executive Director.

The guide addresses common concerns, including:
- Making proposals, exclusions and clarifications part of the final agreement.
- Defining scope, schedule and responsibilities.
- Understanding payment terms, retainage and conditions for payment.
- Protecting time and cost when others cause delays.
- Documenting changes, extra work and project conditions.
- Reviewing back charges, liquidated damages, liability and dispute procedures.
“The resource reflects SEAA’s investment in practical education that enriches members and helps companies anticipate business challenges. Contractors can use it to guide internal discussions and identify questions for experienced management, insurance advisors and qualified construction counsel,” said Jack Metcalfe, NISD representative and Strategic Planning Committee member.
