{"id":7646,"date":"2020-03-23T15:19:34","date_gmt":"2020-03-23T15:19:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.findadistributor.com\/news\/?p=7646"},"modified":"2020-03-24T16:25:22","modified_gmt":"2020-03-24T16:25:22","slug":"caldwell-coil-grab-for-steel-service-center","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.findadistributor.com\/news\/caldwell-coil-grab-for-steel-service-center\/","title":{"rendered":"Caldwell Coil Grab for Steel Service Center"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A 37.5-ton capacity mill-duty coil grab has been installed beneath the hook of a 40-ton capacity overhead crane at a Monarch Steel Company Inc. facility in Decatur, Alabama.<\/p>\n<p>The coil grab was manufactured by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findadistributor.com\/item\/the-caldwell-group\/\">The Caldwell Group<\/a>, a Rockford, Illinois-based company that specializes in both standard and custom lifting equipment. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findadistributor.com\/item\/mazzella-companies\/\">Mazzella Alabama Sling<\/a>,\u00a0a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findadistributor.com\/item\/the-caldwell-group\/\">Caldwell Group<\/a> distributor, provided the coil grab to the Monarch steel service center, located in Decatur in northern Alabama.<\/p>\n<p>The grab replaced a previous coil grab that had become damaged over time; the facility opened in 2004. It is rigged below a 92-ft. span top-running double-girder crane, with a single hoist, manufactured by Zenar. The grab carries coils from the processing machine to a floor storage area, over a distance between 100 ft. and 200 ft.<\/p>\n<p>Josh Berryman, lifting specialist at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findadistributor.com\/item\/mazzella-companies\/\">Mazzella Alabama Sling<\/a>, said: \u201cThe crane has a standard hook block, but there is a scale system between the block and hook. The hook-scale assembly is used to monitor the weight of the coils being lifted. The crane and grab are operated by a single operator in a standing position, using radio remote control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He explained that the coils are typically the same size but do vary in dimensions and weigh up to a maximum of 75,000 lb. (37.5 ton). The maximum outer diameter is 80 in., while the largest inner diameter is 20 in. Coil widths range from 25.5 in. to 76 in.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7647\" style=\"width: 970px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7647\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7647\" src=\"https:\/\/www.findadistributor.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/image0-e1584976472417.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"1280\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7647\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u2018Mill-duty\u2019, as displayed on the coil grab, refers to the high level of work cycles that the equipment is designed for, explained Josh Berryman, lifting specialist at Alabama Sling.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The crane is Service Class 3 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findadistributor.com\/item\/crane-manufacturers-association-america-inc-cmaa\/\">Crane Manufacturers Association of America (CMAA)<\/a> Class D, meaning it is rated for heavy service application. The grab is ASME BTH-1 Design Category B, designated when the conditions of the lift are not always defined or predictable, or when load conditions could be severe.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Monarch\u2019s customer base includes appliance manufacturers and the auto industry.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The tier 1 and tier 2 suppliers to the auto assembly plants rely on these steel service centers, which act as a bridge between metal producers and end consumers.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Monarch is headquartered in Cleveland and is one of the country\u2019s largest providers of hot rolled, cold rolled, and galvanized steel product.
