{"id":16943,"date":"2026-08-07T01:18:59","date_gmt":"2026-08-07T01:18:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.findadistributor.com\/news\/?p=16943"},"modified":"2026-07-27T16:22:18","modified_gmt":"2026-07-27T16:22:18","slug":"freight-rail-research-consortium-launches","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.findadistributor.com\/news\/freight-rail-research-consortium-launches\/","title":{"rendered":"Freight Rail Research Consortium Launches"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Association of American Railroads (AAR) has launched the Freight Rail Research Consortium,\u00a0an\u00a0AAR-led\u00a0network of academic partnerships\u00a0designed to strengthen the freight rail industry\u2019s long-term research and analytical capabilities through\u00a0collaborative, data-driven\u00a0research\u00a0and policy research.<\/p>\n<p>Through\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aar.org\/news\/aar-launches-strategic-research-initiatives-to-strengthen-freight-rail-research-and-policy\/\">consortium<\/a>, AAR has\u00a0established\u00a0new\u00a0research partnerships with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the University of California,\u00a0Berkeley\u00a0and Rutgers University, while expanding\u00a0its longstanding relationship with the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.<\/p>\n<p>Together, these partnerships\u00a0establish\u00a0a long-term platform for\u00a0research on\u00a0the\u00a0economic, operational, technological and policy issues shaping the future of freight\u00a0rail.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIndustries don\u2019t remain competitive simply because they invest in physical infrastructure. They also invest in ideas, research,\u00a0talent\u00a0and institutions that continuously improve how they understand and respond to change.\u00a0As freight rail approaches its 200th\u00a0anniversary next\u00a0year, this initiative reflects AAR\u2019s longstanding commitment to building a strong intellectual foundation for the industry\u2019s next 200 years\u201d, said Rand Ghayad, Senior Vice President, Policy &amp; Economics and Chief Economist at the AAR.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy bringing together leading universities, industry experts and policymakers, we\u2019re investing in the ideas, evidence and\u00a0manpower\u00a0that will help the freight rail industry better anticipate change, inform public policy and solve the complex challenges of the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Freight rail is one of the nation\u2019s\u00a0most enduring\u00a0and\u00a0most critical industries, supporting economic growth, supply chain performance, industrial\u00a0development\u00a0and global competitiveness. Yet despite its importance, many questions surrounding rail economics, freight markets, infrastructure\u00a0investment\u00a0and transportation policy remain understudied. Freight railroads move the raw materials, energy products, agricultural goods, and consumer products that power the U.S. economy.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Research supported through these partnerships will explore a range of critical topics, including:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Rail economics and freight transportation markets<\/li>\n<li>Supply chain resilience and system performance<\/li>\n<li>Infrastructure investment and economic growth<\/li>\n<li>Freight demand, productivity, and competitiveness<\/li>\n<li>Transportation policy and regulatory issues<\/li>\n<li>Trade, industrial development, and freight flows<\/li>\n<li>Emerging technologies and innovation<\/li>\n<li>The economic value of freight rail to businesses,\u00a0consumers\u00a0and communities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The\u00a0consortium\u00a0brings\u00a0together leading centers of excellence whose\u00a0expertise\u00a0spans economics, transportation,\u00a0logistics,\u00a0engineering\u00a0and public policy:<\/p>\n<p><strong>MIT Mobility Initiative\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>AAR is partnering with the\u00a0MIT Mobility Initiative, an interdisciplinary effort that examines the movement of people and goods and the systems that support economic activity. Research will focus on freight rail\u2019s role in supply chain resilience, economic\u00a0performance\u00a0and the efficient movement of goods across the economy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Institute of Transportation Studies, UC Berkeley\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Through a partnership with the\u00a0Institute of Transportation Studies\u00a0(ITS) at UC Berkeley, AAR will support research on freight demand, transportation economics, network performance, modal\u00a0competition\u00a0and the broader economic value freight rail\u00a0delivers\u00a0to shippers and the national economy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rutgers Rail and Transit Program\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>AAR\u2019s collaboration with the\u00a0Rutgers Rail and Transit Program\u00a0will support research on freight transportation, rail policy and the responsible application of artificial intelligence to improve industry performance, strengthen\u00a0safety\u00a0and advance innovation across the rail sector.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RailTEC, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Building on a longstanding collaboration, AAR will\u00a0build upon its work\u00a0with\u00a0RailTEC\u00a0on research spanning rail operations, engineering, safety, workforce\u00a0development\u00a0and emerging technologies.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond individual research projects, the\u00a0consortium\u00a0seeks\u00a0to strengthen the field of rail economics and transportation research by fostering greater engagement between academia and industry.
