I am so excited to watch the immediate impact of this gift take shape\u202fin the expansion of the Packaging Building, and I am even more excited to watch the ripple effect\u202fon the packaging industry at large, which\u202fwill be forever changed for the better,\u202fthanks to their\u202fgenerosity\u202fand\u202ftheir vision for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Frasiers\u2019\u202fcomprehensive philanthropic investment\u202fleverages a sophisticated blended-gift structure, combining immediate cash support with a significant charitable bequest. This gift is just the latest in a series of\u202fthoughtful, visionary\u202fgifts the\u202fFrasiers\u202fhave made to honor the program that launched\u202f Chuck\u2019s successful career since graduating from MSU in 1970 and\u202fturned Jackie into the enthusiastic honorary Spartan\u202fshe is today.<\/p>\n<p>Chuck Frasier\u2019s packaging origin story has two\u202fentry points: first when he took Packaging 101 as a civil engineering major looking for a spark beyond his standard coursework and then,\u202flater, on trash day in the\u202fstudent apartment on\u202fGrand River Avenue\u202fthat he shared with two friends. Credit TMP Architecture.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt sounds like a niche field, but it\u2019s really, really not,\u201d Chuck Frasier said.\u202f\u201cMy Bachelor of Science degree in packaging was my ticket to ride, and it opened all kinds of doors. It has changed my life.\u201d\u202fFrasier began his career as a packaging engineer with GE International in Manhattan, later transitioning into sales while gaining global experience. Driven by an entrepreneurial vision, he founded Dixie Box and Crating Company to meet the needs of international shipping. Following Dixie Box, he founded American Box and Crating before retiring in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Seeing her husband\u2019s joy for his career \u2014 and getting acquainted with the place that helped him build it \u2014 was life-changing for Jackie Frasier, too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo\u202fhear about the\u202ffun\u202fthat he had\u202fas a student\u202fand\u202fhow he\u202fgot\u202fout and made\u202fa career out of it . . . that\u2019s how I\u202fbecame a packaging person,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The\u202fFrasiers\u2019\u202finitial\u202finterest in giving back to the School of Packaging coincided with a much-needed renovation in 2021 to\u202fthe building it has called home since\u202f1964. \u201cLet\u2019s get it going!\u201d Chuck Frasier said, and the\u202fcouple\u202fdid just that, making both the first\u202fand\u202flast gift to fund Phase 1 of the\u202fproject. Their leadership and enthusiasm\u202finspired\u202fa cascade of\u202fadditional\u202fsupport from fellow packaging alums as well as corporate partners. Following the completion and ribbon-cutting of the School of Packaging\u2019s renovated facility in 2023, MSU began the program\u2019s next chapter with Packaging 2.0.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis gift positions Michigan State to accelerate its leadership in packaging education and research in ways we have never seen before,\u201d said Matt Daum, MSU College of Agriculture and Natural Resources dean and associate provost. \u201cIt allows us to build a true hub for innovation, especially in sustainability, and to bring together top minds from industry, government and academia. This will be a place where ideas move faster, partnerships grow stronger and the future of packaging takes shape.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Packaging 2.0 expansion will significantly enhance the school\u2019s capabilities by nearly doubling the size of the existing building and expanding both teaching and research environments. But we still have trash mountains, and I think the answer to those trash mountains is going to come out of packaging, and\u202fit\u2019s\u202fgoing to happen here at MSU.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s make more things recyclable, but let\u2019s also make things\u202frepurposable,\u201d Jackie Frasier added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d love to see it,\u201d Chuck Frasier said. \u201cAnd we might even see it in our\u202fday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The architect for the expansion is TMP Architecture from Kalamazoo, Michigan, and the construction manager is the Christman Company from Lansing, Michigan.
